2012 NFL DRAFT – FINAL MOCK
We’re now just a day away from the start of the 2012 NFL Draft and yet there are still a lot of uncertainties on how things will transpire come Thursday April 26th. There is a lot of ‘smoke’ out there regarding what teams will do, and each front office is trying to play their hand. We know trades will happen, and maybe even the unexpected – but here is a current look at what could happen. This Version, 5.0, is my Final Mock and will be a 7 Round Projection.
1st Round:
1. Colts – Andrew Luck, QB – Stanford *
15 years after selecting Peyton Manning, Luck is going to be their guy and QB of the future. Indy has a lot of rebuilding to do, but this is the right start.
Needs: QB, NT, WR, CB, TE, OG, DE, S, OLB, OT, RB, C.

They moved up for him, and they’ll get him. Pressure is on in DC after trading all those pick away; however, he has a better supporting cast compared to Luck in Indianapolis.

3. Vikings – Michael Floyd, WR – Notre Dame
Minnesota may be looking to trade down, which leads me to believe Floyd is their target (why not just take either Kalil, Blackmon, or Claiborne here otherwise). Floyd is a bit of a surprise (maybe even a reach to some) at No.3, but in my opinion he has all the physical tools, may be more polished than Blackmon and is a good fit for their offense. Kalil may seem like the more likely choice if they can’t trade down, but I believe they want Floyd – and if they can’t trade down then they have to take Floyd here.

4. Browns – Trent Richardson, RB – Alabama *
Richardson is considered a ‘cant-miss’ prospect so I think they take him over Blackmon or Tannehill. It’s a passing league, but Cleveland needs to add a dynamic offensive weapon like Richardson. The Browns face the Ravens and Steelers twice a season (every season), so having a solid running-game to take the pressure off whoever quarterbacks the team is a must. If they would happen to want Tannehill, this would be the time to get him, but I see them targeting a QB at either No.22 or No.37.

5. Tampa Bay – Morris Claiborne, CB – LSU *
Richardson may be their ideal selection (maybe they leap-frog Cleveland and make a deal with Minnesota), but Claiborne makes the most sense from a value standpoint. They added Eric Wright this off-season, but Claiborne still fills a need with aging Rhonde Barber having his best days behind him and Aqib Talib’s off the field issues. They could consider Kalil or even reach for Kuechly, but it’ll ultimately come down to Richardson or Claiborne. However, Claiborne is getting strong consideration at No.3 from Minnesota (with Richardson going No.4) so in that scenario a trade down would make the most sense – possibly with Buffalo looking to move up for Matt Kalil.

6. Rams (Redskins) – Justin Blackmon, WR – Oklahoma State *
If St.Louis is looking to add a receiver they’ll likely have either Blackmon or Floyd to chose from at No.6. In this scenario I like adding Blackmon to solidify their receiving core. However, in the scenario that Blackmon (and Kalil at No.3 and Richardson at No.4) is gone then trading down could offer them the most value. The Rams decided to keep OT Jason Smith, which makes Kalil a less likely target compared to adding a WR, but if he is available they could move Roger Safffold to OG and roll the dice.

I’d suspect that Jacksonville would be happy if Kalil indeed fell to them, but I think that it’d be unlikely (mainly because of Buffalo, Arizona, or the Jets trading up for him) – although, it could happen. The Jags will also consider adding an offensive weapon or a pass rusher with this pick, but new Head Coach Mike Mularkey won’t turn down an opportunity to sure up the offensive line.

8. Dolphins – Ryan Tannehill, QB – Texas A&M
Opinions differ on Tannehill’s value, but its seems likely he’ll end up going higher than most would project. The Dolphins need a QB, and the fact that new Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman was the A&M coach would make this seem like a forgone conclusion. If Tannehill is gone, then Miami would be open to all kind of options here.

Carolina needs to add an interior defensive presence and Cox may be the way they go. Dontari Poe and Michael Brockers could be options, but Cox is making a strong case to be the first of the bunch off the board. If the Panthers look a different direction then MLB Luke Kuechly would make the most sense.

10. Bills – Riley Reiff, OT – Iowa *
Losing OT Demetrius Bell leaves a void that must be addressed early in this draft, therefore, Reiff would be the likely choice. I think Mike Adams could have gotten some consideration before reports that he failed a drug test at the combine. Nonetheless, Reiff should be available if they want him – but would they consider moving up for Kalil should he slip some? I think it’d be worth it.

11. Chiefs – David DeCastro, OG – Stanford *
Interior offensive-lineman usually don’t get selected this high in the draft, but DeCastro is a rare talent that should become an All-Pro caliber player. Kansas City added OT Eric Winston and getting DeCastro here would continue to upgrade the offensive line. I think they’ll be tempted with Dontari Poe and Luke Kuechly, but I like the idea of adding DeCastro even though it may seem a little early.

12. Seattle – Luke Kuechly, MLB – Boston College
With Kuechly you know what you’re getting – a tackling machine. Seattle added MLB Barrett Ruud, but that was on a 1 year contract so they still need to rebuild their linebacker unit and Kuechly would be the way to start. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kuechly was taken higher, which would possibly open the door for Melvin Ingram or Quinton Coples. Also, DeCastro will get consideration here if available.

13. Arizona – Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB – South Carolina
The Cardinals need to sure up their offensive line, but at this point Ingram offers the most value. Calais Campbell was Franchised only is playing on a 1 year contract for 2012 so if he isn’t retained on a long-term deal Ingram would be able to replace him as a DE (or if retained, play with him as an OLB in the 3-4 scheme).

14. Dallas – Mark Barron, SS – Alabama
The Cowboys draft Roy Williams at No.8 overall in 2002 so they won’t shy away from a safety this high. Barron is extremely talent and would help sure up the secondary (along with the addition of CB Brandon Carr) in Dallas. If the Cowboys think about going another direct then likely targets would include Dontari Poe, Michael Brockers, or Quinton Coples (they once draft a UNC lineman high too, Greg Ellis).

15. Eagles – Dontari Poe, DT/NT – Memphis *
I think they would prefer Fletcher Cox (would they trade up for him?), but Poe would be a nice addition for them as well. They’re looking for a presence in the middle of the defensive (DeMeco Ryans was a nice addition as a MLB – thus ruling out Kuechly or Hightower), but they’d also like to upgrade the safety position too so Barron could be their guy. I’d also expect them to end up trading CB Asante Samuel (to Atlanta?) in the coming days, so you can’t rule out Stephon Gilmore or Dre Kirkpatrick either. The trading up for Tannehill talk, I don’t buy it – but crazier things have happened.

16. Jets – Quinton Coples, DE/DT – North Carolina
The Jets have more desirable needs here, but Coples probably would be too hard to pass on here. I think upgrading the offense should be the main focus; however, they have a lot of holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball too. Coples is a nice addition – as would be Barron, Ingram, Upshaw, or Hightower – but I think Floyd, Reiff, Glenn, or DeCastro would have a better impact initially. Chandler Jones, Stephen Hill, Dre Kirkpatrick and Michael Brockers are other names to keep an eye on here.

17. Bengals (Oakland) – Stephon Gilmore, CB/FS – South Carolina
It’s very possible that Gilmore will hear his name called earlier than this spot, but with that said it offers good value for Cincinnati. Gilmore is a fast rising prospect, who some see as more of a FS due to a possible struggle with one-on-one coverage. They have added CB help with the signings of Terrance Newman and Jason Allen (and the return of Pacman Jones), but they need a better long-term solution. This could be a possible spot for DeCastro should he slip, or for the Bengals to upgrade the receiver position.

18. Chargers – Chandler Jones, DE/OLB – Syracuse *
San Diego lost All-Pro OG Kris Dielman to retirement and released OT Marcus McNeill so should the right offensive lineman attract them they could pounce. The Chargers however need to upgrade their pass rush and Jones offers help in that area. They’ll be looking for that rush OLB and could find help in the way of Melvin Ingram, Whitney Mercilus, Nick Perry, or Courtney Upshaw. If they go a different direction then considering Mark Barron, David DeCastro, or even Dont’a Hightower make sense.

The right offensive lineman would be tempting for Chicago (and for new Offensive Coordinator Mike Tice), but they made an addition with Chilo Rachal this week on a 1 year deal to make that less of a need this early. Brockers is one of my favorite players in the draft, and I think he has a lot of upside (even being compared to a young Richard Seymour). I wouldn’t be surprised if he went higher, I think teams could be more intrigued by him than they’re letting on – but nonetheless it’s a nice pick for the Bears at this point.

I think Virginia Tech CB Jayron Hosley could be a potential sleeper for this pick. The addition of Kamerion Wimbley helped with their need for the DE/OLB type but should Quinton Coples fall he’d be hard to pass on – but they will be looking for DT help. Also, their coach is a former offensive lineman, so I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of upgrading the line early on.

I think this is an important draft for Pittsburgh moving forward, so their picks need to be good ones. The Steelers could reach for another MLB if Hightower is gone, address the NT spot, or upgrade the offensive line.

Wolfe is an under-the-rader prospect who is gaining a lot of interest with his long arms and ability to makes plays against the run. There are a lot of expectations for the Broncos to succeed this season, getting the right pieces in place is vital.

The Packers defense was a huge problem last season, so you can bet that Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers will have input on adding players to change that. Ed Reed seems to contemplate retire day-to-day (plus they lost Tom Zbikowski this off-season) so adding quality players to the position has to be an area they address. I think Smith has all the intangibles and fits Baltimore’s aggressive style. The Ravens could go a different direction, with Peter Konz being the next likely choice even though C Matt Birk did resign. Also, they could stand to find a replacement for Ben Grubbs. Ray Lewis is still playing at a high level, but he can’t play forever – so looking for a MLB or replacing Jarrett Johnson is another idea.
